WHAT’S GOOD: RACHAEL COMPTON

Rachael Compton quit her PR job in 2017 to pursue metalsmithing full-time. She’s self taught, and initially had no intention to make jewelry her livelihood, but friends started asking to buy her work, one thing led to another, and By Ren was born. Through her practice as a jeweler, Rachael saw the profound impact objects can have on us both internally and externally. She had a vision of a space where jewelry, homewares, and accessories intertwine to create a rich tapestry of stories, each piece resonating with its own artistry and significance. A resident of Fairmount, Rachael sought that space close to home, and in 2024 she opened her brick and mortar shop, Aiyah. “Aiyah” is a Cantonese expression of surprise, and it certainly fits the surprising shop on Fairmount Ave next door to Javelin Sushi. The shop houses the work of several other jewelers and artists, and hosts monthly art markets in the backyard.
