Elizabeth Bergeland was born and raised in Colorado and Wyoming and is now a Philadelphia‑based painter. Her large-scale, highly personal, surreal figurative paintings demonstrate the tension between conflicting expectations and performative roles in the modern world. She asks the viewer to examine their conceptions of femininity, masculinity, and motherhood; to examine their relationships with ambition and technology. Her work has been shown at Hotbed Gallery, SPRING/BREAK Art Show (Artist Spotlight, 2024), IRL Gallery, Studio 105 at Ray Philly, and Paradigm Gallery, among others. Her work has been featured in publications including Smithsonian Magazine, Create Magazine, Philadelphia Magazine, Friend of the Artist, Root Quarterly, and The Visionary Projects. She will present her first museum solo exhibition in 2026. Her illustrations for The Great Whipplethorp Bug Collection received a Kirkus Star and an NPR review, and her illustrations are held in the permanent collection of the Society of Illustrators Museum.
