Suzanne Sullivan was born and raised in Portland, Oregon, and, after teaching art in New York for many years, moved to Philadelphia in 2017. She graduated college with a degree in photography and then helped run a photography gallery in New York in the 1980s, but she had studied ceramics growing up on the west coast — and returned to clay at her daughter’s urging. They took classes together, and Suzanne fell in love with clay all over again. Somewhere around 2012, her hand-built porcelain pieces began appearing in small shops, and in the past few years she has enjoyed making installations in stores and galleries. Suzanne’s playful yet functional ceramic works often feature striking patterns and gold luster, making them instantly recognizable.
